Arch Enemy Has A New Singer

Angela Gossow Is apparently stepping down as singer of Swedish melodic death metal band Arch Enemy. This is newsworthy to me in the sense that Arch Enemy was the first “extreme” metal band I ever saw in concert (on their tour with Iron Maiden in 2004). I haven’t really loved (or even really consistently enjoyed) Arch Enemy’s material for a few years now, but I’ve always loved Angela’s vocals.

Apparently her replacement is Alissa White-Gluz, now ex-The Agonist. I’ve never enjoyed an album by The Agonist but it certainly wasn’t because of White-Gluz’s voice or her politics. It will be interesting to see if she can bring any new ideas and writing into the band, or whether she will basically be a hired gun who just sings the songs she’s asked to sing.

According to the Loudwire article to which I’ve linked, Gossow will still be involved with Arch Enemy in a business capacity. I’ve already seen people comparing Gossow’s leaving Arch Enemy with Nightwish’s first lead vocalist, Tarja, being asked to leave the band. In this case, however, the current PR position from both Arch Enemy and Gossow make it sound like her departure is on amicable terms, whereas Tarja was very publicly fired from Nightwish.

It’s interesting to me (for no particular reason) that out of the three female-fronted acts that were among my first “metal” bands, only one, Lacuna Coil, still has their original lead vocalist.
